Floor Lamp With Mogul Socket and 3 Way Switch Wiring Diagram

In response to requests for a wiring diagram for a floor lamp with a mogul socket and 3 way switch, we have prepared this rough sketch. There are 4 connections inside the cluster body. All of the neutral wires (nickel screw with ribbed or white wire) from each socket connect in one wire nut. The other connections are for the hot side (brass screw with black or smooth wire) to the switch and socket. With this connection the 3 way switch and the mogul socket are independent of each other.

Heavy Duty Lamp Socket Interior Replacement

A customer brought in this lamp the other day and said it wasn't working properly. The bulb was flickering. Upon inspection, the socket interior was corroded and needed to be replaced. This lamp was fairly new, so the socket interior is the only lamp part needed to be replaced or repaired.

Most traditional sockets in our repair blog need prying and pulling. This heavy duty socket has a screw collar holding the socket cap with the socket shell.

Our replacement interior is also a 3-way interior.

First we unscrew the socket key and then socket collar.

The socket shell pulls off from the socket interior. The socket interior is removed from the  lamp cord.

The wire are twisted tight and a UL knot is tied in the lamp cord.

The new socket interior is attached to the lamp cord by connecting the smooth wire to the brass screw and the ribbed wire to the nickel screw. The socket shell is placed back on the socket interior.

The lamp key is replaced and the screw collar is tightened on the socket.

A bulb is added for testing.
